The idyllic town of Duxbury is located on Cape Cod Bay, 35 miles south of Boston on the South Shore. We are a community with a population of 16,090. Duxbury’s landscape includes dunes and salt marshes, rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, swamps and cranberry bogs, as well as forests, fields and farms. Enclosing Duxbury Bay is Duxbury Beach, a glacial outwash barrier beach. One access to the beach is by a half-mile long wooden bridge, reputedly, the longest in the country.
We are seeking applicants for a full-time Planning Director. This position provides professional and administrative duties in planning, organizing, and coordinating the Town of Duxbury’s planning, land use, and community development functions and activities. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
The ideal candidate will have:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Planning or a related field; five to seven (5-7) year municipal planning experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform essential functions of the job.
2. Certification as Planner by the AICP or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hiring.
3. Thorough knowledge of municipal planning, research data, and the collection of data in support of the Town’s planning services.
4. Working knowledge of federal, state, and local land use regulations and permitting procedures.
5. Ability to meet and deal with the public effectively to accomplish the Town’s planning goals and objectives; ability to take the initiative required to handle problems effectively; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to operate a computer; ability to maintain confidential information; ability to maintain, manage, and organize records; ability to deal appropriately with clients, Town employees, Town officials and other governmental agencies.
6. Ability to deal with sensitive inquiries and complaints.
7. The ability to conduct short- and long-term planning projects and produce results.
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and data processing skills. Proficient computer and mathematical skills.
9. GIS knowledge a plus
10. Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License
