Planner – City of Portland, Maine

The Department of Planning and Urban Development is seeking candidates for a planner position to conduct development review and to undertake planning initiatives for the sustained growth and vitality of Portland, Maine. This position is primarily focused on reviewing applications for new development proposals, but will also include the opportunity to contribute to the long-range planning and policy initiatives of the department related to zoning changes, housing policy, transportation, sustainability, and more. Tasks involve review of development projects for compliance with municipal regulations and design guidelines, including but not limited to zoning, site plan, subdivision and historic preservation ordinances. The position also requires skills in project management, policy analysis and community engagement. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Experience with GIS, graphic design, and other analytical software is a plus. Planners are offered a flexible hybrid schedule of two remote/three in-office days per week. Municipal planning experience and master’s degree in planning or closely related field or equivalent combination preferred. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.

This is a Pro-Tech Union Position – Grade 8 with a pay range of $61,990.76 – $71,838.00 per year. Additionally, a 6% differential will be paid upon presentation to the City of certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners as a Certified Planner.
